Monessen, PA – A Brownsville man is facing charges after a shooting prompted a standoff in Monessen overnight.
Monessen Police were called to Penn Highlands Mon Valley Hospital after a gunshot victim arrived at the hospital just after 11 p.m. on Thursday.
The victim was conscious and alert and told officers he was sitting in his girlfriend’s vehicle when he was shot in Monessen.
The victim’s girlfriend told police she and Jay Din Eleam, 21, engaged in a verbal argument over the phone and Eleam encouraged the victim to come to a residence on Leeds Avenue in Monessen to fight.
The victim and his girlfriend drove past the Leeds Avenue residence and parked in a back alley.
Investigators believe there was an exchange of gunfire between the victim and Eleam.
The victim inside the vehicle was shot once in his forehead and driven to Penn Highlands Mon Valley Hospital by his girlfriend before being flown to a Pittsburgh-area hospital for treatment. The victim is expected to survive.
Police observed bullet holes in the windshield and on the driver side rear window of the vehicle driven by the victim.
Monessen Police, Pennsylvania State Police, Charleroi Regional Police, and Rostraver Township Police attempted to execute a search warrant on the Leeds Avenue residence where Eleam was believed to be staying.
Investigators learned Eleam was hiding in the attic of the residence with a possible firearm.
Monessen Police requested Pennsylvania State Police’s Special Emergency Response Team (SERT) for assistance.
Eleam did not comply with police orders to exit the residence which prompted a nearly five-hour standoff with police until he attempted to run from the residence and was taken into custody without incident at approximately 9 a.m. on Friday.
Eleam is facing charges of attempted homicide, aggravated assault, possessing instruments of crime, person not to possess, recklessly endangering another person, and simple assault.
Additional charges are pending.
