Allegheny Township, PA -- Allegheny Township Police Department filed charges against a Verona man accused of stealing a stranger's checks and cashing them on multiple occasions.
In mid-March, a woman reported a possible fraud incident to Allegheny Township Police.
While she was at her local bank, the woman was advised by bank employees that her checking account was compromised.
A check, in the amount of $700, was cashed a few days prior and paid to the order of Tyler Vanzandt, according to investigators.
In the memo line, it stated it was for a bathroom remodel, but the victim told police she did not know Vanzandt.
The victim was made aware of a second check paid to the order of Vanzandt for $650, endorsed with a signature for Vanzandt, and with the same style pen as the first check.
The following day, the victim called Allegheny Township Police and reported that a third check worth $450 paid to Vanzandt was cashed in Ohio.
Allegheny Township Police pulled PennDot records and verified the signature of Vanzandt matched the signature and writing on the cashed checks.
Officers made contact with Vanzandt who claimed he obtained the checks while working as a courier for the company, Roadie. Instead of delivering the checks, Vanzandt allegedly told officers he kept the checks due to personal finance issues.
In total, police said three checks were forged in the victim's name to Vanzandt, totaling $1,800.
Vanzandt is facing charges of forgery, access device fraud, theft by unlawful taking, and theft of mail.
