Jeannette, PA -- A Jeannette man is facing criminal charges after a dog he released from a residence attacked a police canine officer.
Jeannette Police were assisting the FBI Task Force with serving a warrant on a wanted individual on Adams Avenue in Jeannette in July of 2026.
While at the residence, a male, later identified as Gino Ferrari, told police the person they were looking for was not in the residence and gave officers consent to search but had to remove his dog first.
Police on scene said Ferrari, 63, made eye contact and observed officers on scene including Jeannette Police's K-9 and his handler who were standing approximately 10 feet away.
Ferrari was permitted to enter the residence and secure the dog.
Moments later, police said they heard the dog barking and the pit bull charged toward the fence in the direction of the K-9 officer in an aggressive manner.
Police alerted other officers in an attempt to contain or neutralize the dog, but the dog made it over the fence and began attacking K-9 Diesel by latching onto Diesel's neck area.
Officers attempted to tase the attacking dog, but those attempts were ineffective.
K-9 Diesel was freed from the dog's bite after officers physically had to intervene and pepper spray the pit bull to release.
K-9 Diesel was subsequently taken to a local veterinary hospital for treatment of his injuries which resulted in puncture wounds to the left side of his neck and scratch marks.
While on scene, police learned from a witness that the pit bull allegedly attempted to go after another individual walking their dog and claimed the dog killed a puppy.
Ferrari is facing charges related to injuries to a police dog, recklessly endangering another person, and inflicting injury to a domestic animal.
