What should I do if my mailbox is damaged from a snow plow?
Mailbox Damage Due to Snow Plows
By State law, the Township is only held accountable for damage to a mailbox if a part of the plow or vehicle actually hits it. The Township is not responsible for damage to mailboxes caused by snowplows, as mailboxes are placed in the right-of-way at the property owner's risk. To minimize damage, mailboxes should be positioned as far from the right-of-way as possible while still allowing access for mail carriers.
Procedure for Mailbox Damage Claims:
If you believe your mailbox was struck by a Township plow vehicle, contact the Director of Public Works or #610-865-3291
- The Director of Public Works will visit the site to assess the situation by visual inspection and discussions with the plow operator to determine if the mailbox was actually hit.
Determination of Damage:
- If the Director of Public Works confirms that the mailbox was hit, he will contact the Township insurance carrier and inform the homeowner to repair or replace the mailbox. The homeowner should send all costs along with a copy of their homeowner’s insurance policy to the Township’s insurance carrier.
- If the Director does not believe the mailbox was hit by the plow or vehicle, he will inform the resident that it is their responsibility to repair or replace the mailbox.
Disagreement with Determination:
If the resident disagrees with the determination, the Director of Public Works will complete an action form and send it to the Township insurance carrier for review.
