TWO UMPD DETECTIVES HONORED BY DISTRICT ATTORNEY'S OFFICE

On Wednesday May 13, 2026, Upper Merion Detectives Jay Nakahara and Mike Davis were recognized by the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office for their work investigating a sexual predator. During the annual Law Enforcement and Civilian Commendation Ceremony, Montgomery County DA Kevin Steele presented them with an award for Exceptional Performance.

In March of 2024, Upper Merion Police had taken a report of a suspicious phone charger that a resident found plugged into the wall of her apartment bedroom.  Officer Joe Flint responded and found that the suspicious phone charger was actually a hidden camera recording device. Officer Flint properly secured and protected the charger to preserve any potential digital forensic evidence.

Det. Jay Nakahara was able to forensically inspect the charger and found numerous video files including hidden files that depicted the female victim in various stages of undress. A male suspect was quickly developed and was arrested. In subsequent search warrants, Detectives Nakahara and Davis found that the suspect had broken into the victim's apartment on numerous occasions and had video recorded her daily movements. A large amount of external hard drives with hundreds of thousand images and videos were located in the suspect's apartment.

During the month's long investigation, Detective Nakahara and Davis found additional victims that the actor had secretly been recording. They also found that the suspect had been stealing underwear and personal items from these females and kept them in his own apartment. Digital Forensic Evidence also revealed that the suspect had been actively involved in doing this type of behavior for nearly 10 years back to when he was in college.

Their tireless investigation and extreme attention to detail resulted in the suspect pleading guilty to numerous counts of Indecent Assault, Invasion of Privacy, Burglary, Theft, Receiving Stolen Property and other related charges. The suspect was ultimately sentenced to 10 to 60 years in prison and during sentencing the court deemed him a sexually violent predator where he will be under court supervision for 60 years.

Tremendous work Detectives Nakahara and Davis!
