On Thursday May 7th 2026, Upper Merion Detectives Matt Romberger and Bob Smull were honored by the Burlington County (NJ) Prosecutor's Office for their work on a recent stolen vehicle investigation. They received the Prosecutor's Office Unit Excellence Award.
During the Spring of 2025, Upper Merion Township, as well as several neighboring departments in Montgomery and Chester County, saw a rash of vehicles stolen and numerous vehicles broken into. Detectives Romberger and Smull initiated a months long investigation and were able to develop several suspects. As they continued their investigation, they quickly realized that their suspects were being linked to numerous incidents in New Jersey as well. Detectives Romberger and Smull then began collaborating with several New Jersey police departments to further this investigation.
Upper Merion Detectives Danny Bocanumenth and Alex Clark were able to provide crucial assistance by generating additional intelligence by analyzing numerous cell phone records and surveillance video to help identify the suspects.
As a result of this teamwork, two males were taken into custody and are currently in local Correctional Facilities awaiting further court proceedings. In total, the suspects were linked to ten (10) stolen vehicles in PA, numerous vehicle break ins, as well as a burglary and credit card fraud in Upper Merion.
At the time of their arrests, the suspects were also wanted in New Jersey in connection to approximately fifteen (15) additional vehicle thefts, and a home invasion robbery.
