August Traffic Safety Tip of the Month

August Traffic Safety Tip of the Month

The Pennsylvania Vehicle Code is what guides the police in determining what is and is not a traffic violation.  While Lower Moreland Police officers have the authority to enforce all of the vehicle codes, there are a few that we pay special attention to based on complaints or repeat violation locations.  They are as follows:

Pennsylvania Vehicle Code 75, section 3305.  Limitations on overtaking on the left:
  • No vehicle shall be driven to the left side of the center or marked center line of the roadway in overtaking and passing another vehicle proceeding in the same direction unless the left side is clearly visible and is free of oncoming traffic for a sufficient distance ahead to permit the overtaking and passing to be completely made without interfering with the operation of any vehicle approaching from the opposite direction or any vehicle overtaken. In every event, the overtaking vehicle must return to an authorized lane of travel as soon as practicable and, in the event the passing movement involves the use of a lane authorized for vehicles approaching from the opposite direction, before coming within 200 feet of any approaching vehicle.
  • COMMON LOCATION: Vehicles traveling south in the northbound lane on Huntingdon Pike approaching Red Lion Road to get into the left turn lane.

Pennsylvania Vehicle Code 75, section 3309.  Driving on roadways laned for traffic:
  • Whenever any roadway has been divided into two or more clearly marked lanes for traffic, the following rules, in addition to all others not inconsistent therewith, shall apply:
Subsection (4) Prohibitions against changing lanes. -Official traffic-control devices may be installed prohibiting the changing of lanes on a section of roadway, and drivers of vehicles shall obey the directions of every such device.
  • COMMON LOCATION: Vehicles traveling straight from the right turn lane on northbound Huntingdon Pike at Philmont Avenue

Pennsylvania Vehicle Code 75, section 3316.1.  Prohibiting use of interactive mobile device:

  • (a)  Motor vehicle.--Except as provided under subsection (b), no driver shall use an interactive mobile device while driving a motor vehicle.
  • (b)  Emergency use exception.--Using an interactive mobile device shall be permissible by a driver of a motor vehicle if necessary to communicate with a law enforcement official or other emergency services to prevent injury to persons or property.
  • This is also known as the PAUL MILLER LAW aka Pennsylvania's Distracted Driving Law, which bans the use of hand-held devices while driving a vehicle.

Please be careful and respectful on the road. It saves lives.
