As a member of the Penn College community, your safety is our top priority. While we hope that an active shooter incident never occurs on our campus, it's essential to be prepared and know how to respond in such a situation.
In the event of an active shooter incident, every second counts. Knowing what to do can make a difference in staying safe. Here are some crucial steps to take:
- Run, Hide, Fight: If you are in a building where the incident is occurring, try to evacuate the area quickly and safely. If you cannot escape, find a secure place to hide. As a last resort, be prepared to fight for your life.
- Stay Informed: Monitor official college communication channels, such as emergency alerts, social media, and the college website, for updates and instructions.
- Avoid the Area: Do not attempt to approach the area where the incident is occurring. This can put you and others at risk.
- Follow Law Enforcement Instructions: When law enforcement arrives, follow their instructions carefully. They are trained to handle these situations and will guide you to safety.
To prepare for an active shooter incident, take the following steps:
- Familiarize yourself with campus emergency procedures: Know the emergency exit routes from your classrooms, residence halls, and other frequently visited areas.
- Sign up for emergency alerts: Ensure you receive timely notifications in case of an emergency.
- Participate in training and drills: Take advantage of active shooter training and drills offered by the college to learn more about response strategies and procedures.
Remember, your safety is our top priority. By being prepared and knowing how to respond, we can work together to minimize the risk of harm in the event of an active shooter incident.
