May - National Mental Health Awareness Month
National Mental Health Awareness Month is officially observed in the United States during the month of May.
Because "mental health" and "mental illness" are often used interchangeably, it is common for people to look for Mental Illness Awareness Month. However, there are actually two distinct observances dedicated to this cause:
1. Mental Health Awareness Month (May)
Established in 1949 by Mental Health America, this month-long observance takes place every May.
The Goal: To reduce the stigma surrounding behavioral health issues, highlight the importance of mental well-being, and advocate for better care and resources.
The Focus: It emphasizes that mental health is just as important as physical health and promotes early intervention, therapy, and self-care practices.
2. Mental Illness Awareness Week (October)
While May is the official month, October is also a highly significant time for mental health advocacy. In 1990, Congress officially established the first full week of October as Mental Illness Awareness Week (MIAW) in recognition of the efforts of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).
The Goal: Because of this week—along with events like National Depression Screening Day (typically October 6th) and World Mental Health Day (October 10th)—many organizations and advocates colloquially refer to October as "Mental Illness Awareness Month."
The Focus: This period tends to focus specifically on raising awareness, offering support, and erasing the stigma for the millions of Americans diagnosed with serious mental illnesses (such as major depression, bipolar disorder, or schizophrenia).
Whether it is May or October, the core mission of both observances is to ensure that those struggling with their mental health know they are not alone and that help and resources are available. The National Alliance on Mental Illness or nami.org is a valuable resource for those who struggle with mental health/illness issues.
