Every year SBPD receives numerous firework complaints on and around Independence Day. We would like to remind residents that while in recent year's Pennsylvania State Law changed to permit PA residents to purchase and possess consumer fireworks, that Strasburg Borough's Fireworks Ordinance (law) has not changed. There are no aerial fireworks of any kind permitted in Strasburg Borough. Please review the Borough’s Fireworks Ordinance (https://ecode360.com/27113215) to avoid any unwanted police visits or fines.
There are no fireworks of any kind (aerial or ground-based) permitted at any of the parks located within Strasburg Borough or on Strasburg Borough property.
If you are celebrating, please keep the following in mind.
- Only use fireworks outdoors in clear, open spaces, well away from homes, dry vegetation, and vehicles.
- Prevent children from handling or igniting fireworks. Sparklers can reach temperatures exceeding 2,000°F and are highly hazardous.
- Light only one device at a time and move back quickly to a safe distance. Never lean over a firework while lighting the fuse.
- Always have a garden hose or a bucket of water nearby to put out unintended spot fires. This is especially important this year with the excessive heat and lack of rain.
- If a firework fails to ignite, do not try to handle or relight it. Wait at least 20 minutes, then soak it in a bucket of water before disposal.
- Soak both spent and unused fireworks in water for a few hours (or overnight) to prevent them from igniting in the trash.
- The loud, unexpected bursts can severely frighten animals and trigger PTSD in some veterans. Always keep pets securely indoors, and consider giving your neighbors a polite heads-up before lighting anything.
- Be reasonable and respectful about the time and how late it is.
- Most importantly, be safe!
