Updates on Recent Protest Incidents and Our Plans for Upcoming Protest in Manheim

The Manheim Borough Police Department is providing updates on a recent protest and information about a planned protest expected to take place in coming days.

- On June 23, there was a protest in Manheim that included a march in the borough. Roadways were obstructed and we received information about altercations between individuals.

To date, we have not received reports from potential victims of such behavior. We did receive calls from motorists who were stopped or diverted their direction of travel.

We are also looking into the blocking of roadways and that investigation includes consideration of citations.

Our department, nor PennDOT, received any notice or information about the June 23 demonstration – and roadway obstruction – prior to the event.

- As for the upcoming protest, we have received information about a demonstration planned for July 8. This demonstration is to include a march in the borough.

We received information about the July 8 event, and have been making efforts to contact the protest group involved in that event. We have been in communication with protesters from the June 23 event and they have indicated their demonstration is nonviolent. We are informing individuals of their constitutional rights, and the constitutional rights of residents not participating in the demonstration.

Specifically, obstructing a local or state roadway is a criminal offense. Community events that obstruct roadways require proper permit from Manheim Borough Council and insurance. We have not received confirmation that any such permits were obtained for the July 8 event.

In the event the demonstration crosses a local or state road, police will be available to direct traffic to minimize traffic delays and protect pedestrians.

It is not our intention to impede or silence peaceful demonstration. However, we are taking steps to ensure the safety of residents and protesters, and to protect businesses, buildings, and public property.

We are in contact with other law-enforcement agencies, which will be providing resources on July 8.

We remain hopeful that all demonstrations remain peaceful and strongly encourage dialogue between the protest group(s) and our department prior to and during the event on the 8th.
