On August 25, 2020, Chief of Police Jarrad Berkihiser, gave his report to Lancaster City Council re: use of pepper spray during Demonstrations on May 30th & 31st 2020.
Message from Chief Berkihiser on demonstrations: “Peaceful demonstrations offer opportunities for dialogue that opens lines of communication to allow for forward movement and potential change in our community. Violence, inciting violence, the destruction of property and bringing weapons to a peaceful demonstration has the exact opposite outcome. It places communities, their residents and businesses in turmoil and closes off any chance at meaningful dialogue, leaving behind a path of emotional, physical and financial devastation that takes years to repair. We are committed to facilitating peaceful demonstrations because the violence we are seeing elsewhere has no place in Lancaster and is not Lancaster.” Chief Berkihiser
