A York County man charged with firing gun during road rage incident will have his case proceed to county court after waiving his preliminary hearing earlier this month.
Maurice Martice Thomas, of York city, waived his preliminary hearing before Judge Courtney Monson on June 4 on two counts of aggravated assault and one count each of carrying a firearm without a license, discharging a firearm into an occupied structure and propelling missiles into occupied vehicles.
Thomas, 42, is accused of firing a handgun into the victim’s vehicle at the intersection of Sterling Place and Bloomingdale Avenue in Manheim Township the evening of May 21. Thomas does not possess a permit to carry a concealed weapon.
The victim had called 911 after a driver later identified as Thomas was driving aggressively and began following him for a little over a mile shortly before 7 p.m.
When the victim began turning onto Bloomingdale Avenue he heard a single gunshot and saw Thomas speed away, later finding a bullet hole in the rear of his vehicle. The bullet struck and deflated the victim’s vehicle’s spare tire and continued through the cabin of the vehicle into the front passenger seat where it became lodged.
Police later recovered a single bullet casing from the intersection.
Three witnesses told police they heard the gunshot shortly before police arrived.
Residential surveillance footage from the area purports to show Thomas following the victim for several blocks about two minutes before the victim called 911. Police were able to identify Thomas as the driver when they identified his license plate.
Thomas remains in Lancaster County Prison without bail.
Manheim Township Police Det. Jonathan Martin filed the charges.
First Assistant District Attorney Travis Anderson will prosecute the case.
All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
