A Lancaster County jury convicted a man Tuesday of second-degree murder and related offenses for the death of Dennis Pitch who was killed in a home-invasion robbery in 2016.
The jury deliberated several hours Monday and Tuesday before convicting 34-year-old Christopher J. Lyles of killing Pitch inside Pitch’s Salisbury Township home.
The jury decided the case Tuesday morning about 11:45 a.m.
Assistant District Attorney Mark Fetterman presented evidence over the course of six days that Lyles and three other men chose Pitch’s Timothy Drive home as a robbery target. On the night of Dec. 2, 2016, Lyles and two other men went inside the home.
The fourth man stayed at the group’s vehicle.
Pitch was fatally shot in the head and torso.
Lyles faces a mandatory life-without-parole sentence on the second-degree murder charge when President Judge David Ashworth orders sentence after a background investigation.
Lyles also was convicted of six other charges: two counts each of robbery, burglary and conspiracy.
As the jury foreman read the verdict, Lyles looked at the panel but had no physical reaction to the verdict.
Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Ponessa assisted in the prosecution.
Brandon Bills, Kristopher Smith and Michael Baker are charged with the same offenses. Their cases are pending. They are presumed innocent.
Among the evidence presented at Lyles’ trial was:
- Testimony from co-defendant Bills, who was with the group before and after the home invasion and stayed at the vehicle.
- Testimony about cellphone locations that tracked the group and placed them at or around Pitch’s home at the time of the murder.
- Testimony from a prison inmate who overheard Lyles discussing the murder.
- Surveillance video footage of Smith’s vehicle near Pitch’s home around the time of the murder.
The group believed Pitch was in possession of a large amount of cash. The group intended to take the money.
Pennsylvania State Police Trooper Jonathan Potoka filed charges. He and other troopers testified.
