Two men were convicted this week in Lancaster County Court of a robbery last year that left a man shot in the stomach, surviving after emergency surgery.
Clifton K. Hunter, 25, was convicted of attempted murder, multiple counts of robbery and conspiracy, and illegal possession of a firearm.
Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Ponessa presented evidence that Hunter shot a man in the stomach – one of two men who were robbed at gunpoint Oct. 16, 2018, at a house on South Lime Street.
Jovar J. Jackson, 25, was convicted of multiple counts of robbery and conspiracy.
The jury returned its verdicts Wednesday morning following a week-long trial.
Lancaster County Judge Donald Totaro will sentence Hunter and Jackson after background investigations are completed. With the verdicts, Judge Totaro raised bail to $1 million apiece.
ADA Ponessa called to testify a third co-defendant in the case who said he was not aware of a robbery plot, but that is what happened at the house.
At the house, Jackson asked the victims for money and drugs; Jackson and Hunter then started searching the home, according to testimony.
The man who was shot was on a phone and told, by one of the robbers, to hang up the phone. When he did not immediately hang up, Hunter shot him in the stomach.
The victim lost half of his blood volume and had three sections of his intestines removed in surgeries. He would not have survived without immediate surgery, according to testimony.
After the incident, Hunter fled to Rhode Island where he was captured by U.S. Marshals.
Jackson also was on the lam and arrested five months later.
Lancaster city police Detective Tom Ginder filed charges.
The case against the third co-defendant who testified, Jamel Nesmith, is pending.
