A former Lancaster County teacher recently pleaded guilty to several charges regarding illegal contact with a student.
Timothy M. Sterner, 54, pleaded guilty to five felonies and two misdemeanors, and will be sentenced after a background investigation and sex offender assessment.
Lancaster County Judge Dennis Reinaker accepted the pleas and will order sentence, likely in a couple months.
The guilty pleas will require Sterner to register under Megan’s Law for the rest of his life.
Sterner, formerly a music teacher with the School District of Lancaster, is no longer employed by the district. His teaching certificate is suspended, according to Assistant District Attorney Fritz Haverstick, lead prosecutor.
Sterner, of Nolt Road, met the boy when he was a freshman and used his position as the boy’s teacher to get close to him. Sterner then committed crimes over a period of three years, ending in 2015, according to ADA Haverstick.
In all, Sterner pleaded guilty to felony counts of unlawful contact with a minor, solicitation of institutional sexual assault, dissemination of child pornography, corruption of minors and endangering the welfare of a child, and misdemeanor counts of indecent exposure and corruption of minors.
Several charges determined to be duplicative were withdrawn as part of the plea resolution.
Among the conduct Sterner admitted to: asking the boy for sexual contact, exposing himself to the boy and performing lewd acts in his presence, sending lewd images/pornography to the boy, showing the boy pornography, and having lewd conversations with the boy via online, phone and in person.
Lancaster city police Detective Gareth Lowe filed charges.
