A Dauphin County woman has been charged with crashing into and killing a teenaged pedestrian along a Penn Township road last year as she was driving while using social media.

Mikayla Victoria Mustard, of the 6600 block of Iru Lane, Lower Paxton Township, was charged with accidents involving death or personal injury, homicide by vehicle, involuntary manslaughter, recklessly endangering another person and three summary traffic offenses.

Mustard, 24, is accused of crashing into and killing 16-year-old Curtis Groff in the 200 block of West Sun Hill Road on May 2, 2024.

Police found Groff, who had been weed whacking near the roadway, dead on the side of the road just after 9:30 p.m. Multiple witnesses reported having seen Groff working alongside the road with several traffic cones set up to alert passing motorists.

Evidence on-scene indicated that Groff had been struck by a vehicle, but Mustard, who had been driving westbound toward Harrisburg, was not present. Mustard’s father later brought her back to the site of the crash while police were there to report her having struck something.

Mustard sent and received messages as she continued driving, including messages saying there was blood on her vehicle and that she would go to jail if she hurt someone.

Mustard voluntarily turned herself in to authorities with her attorney to Judge Joseph Stauffer, who set Mustard’s bail at $50,000 unsecured in a preliminary arraignment on May 23. Mustard is currently free on that amount.

Northern Lancaster County Regional Police Officer Alex Good filed the charges.

Assistant District Attorney Chris Miller will prosecute the case.

All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
