An autopsy was performed Monday on a Marietta man who died Thursday night after fleeing police and being handcuffed.
Todd Michael Groff, 44, fell unconscious as police were helping him get to his feet on the Susquehanna River shore, near Front Street.
A deputy coroner pronounced Groff dead about 9 p.m. at the river.
The Lancaster County Coroner’s Office performed the autopsy Monday morning and did not make determination on a cause and manner of death. The coroner’s office will do so when toxicology results are received, expected in a few weeks.
The Lancaster County District Attorney’s Office is investigating the incident. A detective went to the scene Thursday for forensic analysis.
Chief County Detective Kent Switzer and Assistant District Attorney Travis S. Anderson are working in consultation with Susquehanna Regional police.
Following consultation with the Coroner’s Office on Monday, the District Attorney’s Office learned there was no trauma found on Groff’s body.
Here is a narrative of the Thursday night incident:
Susquehanna Regional police were called to South Clay Street about 7:15 p.m. for a reported parking violation.
Police found the vehicle and its driver, Groff, in the area. Police asked Groff to move the vehicle. In that time, police discovered Groff had an active bench warrant out of the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office.
Police attempted to stop Groff and Groff drove away from police, a few blocks, before stopping the vehicle and running across train tracks – about 200 yards in total - to the river shore.
There, officers handcuffed Groff. Groff was on his knees when officers pulled him up to walk him to a cruiser.
Groff collapsed as he was being helped up.
Columbia Borough, Northwest Regional and Mount Joy Borough police responded to the scene. Susquehanna Regional and Northwest Regional police performed CPR prior to medics arriving.
