A Lancaster County judge sentenced a Chester County man to an aggregate sentence of nine years to include time served in custody awaiting trial, additional prison time and consecutive probation with restrictive conditions last week after he pleaded guilty to taking part in a high-speed street race that killed a Manor Township motorcyclist in 2023.
Brandon Caleb Gentile will spend the first two days of his probation in Lancaster County Prison. That will be followed by 12 months of house arrest and then up to two months of intensive supervision for homicide by vehicle consecutive to 321 to 729 days in custody for carrying a firearm without a license.
Judge Thomas Sponaugle sentenced Gentile, of South Coatesville Borough, after he pleaded guilty on May 29 to 15 offenses including homicide by vehicle, firearms not to be carried without a license, four counts of recklessly endangering another person, two counts of driving under the influence and other offenses.
Gentile, 21, was found to have marijuana and cocaine metabolites in his blood when he raced a motorcycle along eastbound Route 30 in Manheim Township on June 4, 2023. The investigation into the subsequent three-vehicle crash that killed 22-year-old Thomas Hartenstine determined that Gentile’s impairment was not a contributing factor to the cause of the collision.
Hartenstine was pronounced dead at the scene despite first responders’ life-saving efforts.
Witnesses to the crash told police that Gentile and a motorcycle had been racing moments before the crash occurred.
Speaking to police, Gentile initially denied taking part in a street race, claiming he was casually driving along the highway when the motorcycle approached him.
But footage from PennDOT cameras showed that Gentile and the motorcyclist had been driving erratically across the county, reaching speeds of more than 140 mph and unsafely passing about 60 other vehicles.
An examination of Gentile’s vehicle showed he was traveling more than 125 mph just three seconds before the crash. The posted speed limit in the area of the crash is 55 mph.
Additionally, police found a loaded handgun, a THC vape pen, alprazolam pills and other drug paraphernalia in Gentile’s vehicle. Gentile does not have a permit to carry a concealed weapon and was not authorized to possess the pills or vape pen.
Gentile voluntarily consented to a blood draw as a part of the crash investigation.
Assistant District Attorney Kyle Linardo prosecuted the case.
Manheim Township Police Cpl. Daniel Swigart filed the charges.
