Manheim Township police are asking the public for help in locating a Detroit man who stole more than $1,000 from a local resident by fraudulently altering a check they had written.

Alontaye Warez Lewis, 29, was charged with dealing in the proceeds of unlawful activities and theft by unlawful taking.

Lewis is accused of altering the victim’s check to be paid to a second victim and depositing the money into an account bearing the second victim’s name. This second victim, a New York resident, told police the account bearing their name was opened fraudulently without their authorization using an address in Michigan.

Neither of the victims know one another or Lewis.

The first victim had written a check from their bank account and mailed it for delivery. The check was then stolen in transit and altered.

After the check was deposited Lewis is accused of withdrawing $1,140 from the fraudulent account in five separate ATM withdrawals in December 2025. Video surveillance footage captured a man later identified as Lewis making the ATM withdrawals from the fraudulently opened account.

Lewis is currently wanted for his arrest.
