On August 31, 2022 at 5:18 PM the Chambersburg Police Department was dispatched to the residence of 70 N. 4th St. Apt 1 for a report of shots fired. Responding Officers received information that a male suspect in the residence had shot 2 dogs and subsequently fired a shot at a female who was also within the residence. The female was not shot or injured by the gun shot. She was able to subsequently flee from the residence where she was met by responding Officers on scene. She was physically unharmed in the course of this incident.
The Pennsylvania State Police Special Emergency Response Team (PSP SERT) was called to respond to the scene as the suspect, later identified as Clifton Nathanial Gatling, remained barricaded inside the residence. An arrest warrant was obtained for Gatling while officers secured the area surrounding the scene. At 9:22 PM State Police SERT made entry into the residence and took Gatling into custody without further injury or incident.
Gatling has been charged with Criminal Attempt Homicide, Criminal Attempt Aggravated Assault, Cruelty to Animals, Simple Assault, and Discharging a Firearm into an Occupied Structure. The investigation will continue and it is active and ongoing.
