FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
For the safety of pedestrians and children who walk to school, the Borough of Chambersburg would like to remind residents and business owners that local law (§ 254) requires that an effort be made to remove snow and ice for a width of at least four feet from sidewalks along the street within 24 hours after the end of a winter storm, which has been determined to be noon on Monday, January 26, 2026, in order to make such sidewalk safe for the public. These inspections are a requirement of the Borough's proactive risk mitigation compliance and are required.
Please be advised that on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, Borough representatives will inspect all sidewalks within street rights-of-way in the Borough and issue tickets to property owners that failed to clear sidewalks of snow and ice. A first offense ticket includes a fine of $50. A second offense ticket, occurring within 12 months of the first offense, includes a fine of $100. Failure to pay the fine will result in charges being filed with the Magisterial District Judge.
It is important to note that inspections will be conducted for sidewalks within street rights-of-way in the Borough only. If you are uncertain where those streets are located, please visit the Borough website at www.chambersburgpa.gov. From the front page, use the Maps link and then select the Street Map of Chambersburg link.
If you have any questions, please contact Tyler Fairchild, Director of Public Works, at 717-251-2448 or tfairchild@chambersburgpa.gov.
