EIGHT SECONDS: ONE FATAL DISTRACTION

Whether it's answering a text, reading an email, putting on makeup, reaching for the radio or eating and drinking, the fact is that many people become distracted while driving.  With life coming at us from every direction it's an easy temptation to answer that cell phone, no matter when it beeps, vibrates or plays our favorite notification sound.  We have to remember that so much can happen in a matter of seconds, which is the time it takes to move our eyes off of the roadway to answer a text or attend to another distraction inside the vehicle.  Currently, Pennsylvania law prohibits a driver from using "an interactive wireless communication device to send, read or write a text-based communication while the vehicle is in motion."  By the law's definition, "text-based communication" means a "text message, instant message, electronic mail OR other written communication composed or received on an interactive wireless communications device."  Although the penalty for texting while driving is a summary offense with a fine of $50, the potential cost to not only the driver but other innocent pedestrians or motorists is far greater.  In the blink of an eye, someone's life could be changed forever because a driver was distracted just long enough that by the time they re-focused their attention back onto the roadway, it was too late.  Attached to this message is a link to a very powerful video based on an actual event that had a ripple effect in one community.  We encourage you to take time out of your day to view this video and possibly share it with a young driver or anyone who you feel needs to take a step back and be reminded of the dangers of distracted driving.  As always, be kind to one another and be safe, especially out on the roadways.
