The Lower Swatara Township Board of Commissioners have issued a snow emergency that will be in effect from 6pm Saturday, January 24th through 12pm Monday, January 26th.  

This declaration prohibits the parking of vehicles on Township roadways during the snow emergency.  Anyone violating this order is subject to fines and costs as outline in Lower Swatara Township Ordinance Section 15-503.  The ordinance is as follows:

§ 15-503Unattended Vehicles Prohibited During Emergency.

During such time as a snow removal condition is in effect it shall be a violation of this Part for any person, firm, organization or entity to park, abandon or leave any vehicle unattended on the various streets, roads and highways and their adjacent rights-of-way within the boundaries of the Township.

§ 15-505Violations and Penalties.

During such time as a snow removal condition is in effect, any person who shall park or allow a vehicle to remain parked anywhere upon or along any of the streets of the Township shall be guilty of a violation of this Part and, upon conviction thereof, shall be sentenced to pay a fine of $25 and costs of prosecution, or, to undergo imprisonment for not more than one day for each $10 of the unpaid balance of fine and costs.

Further, it is recommended that citizens limit their travel to only essential or emergency trips during this time. Our Public Works Department will continue snow removal throughout this weather event and will do their best to keep roads open as best as our equipment and manpower will allow, but the severity of the weather conditions will ultimately determine the condition of the roads. Your cooperation and patience is greatly appreciated.

As a general reminder it is vitally important that all residents keep their furnace vents free of snow and debris so as not to cause furnace malfunctions and potentially dangerous life-threatening conditions.  

Residents are urged to clear snow from around fire hydrants, ensuring they remain accessible and visible for emergency responders in case of an emergency.
