As we enter the colder months, many Pennsylvanians will start their car and walk away from it in order to get the car warmed up and melt the ice that has formed on the windows. Unfortunately, this may lead to the car being stolen by an opportunistic car thief. These criminals are aware of the fact that many people warm up their car in this manner, and they are looking for this type of thing on a regular basis. We ask everyone who may be considering this type of cold weather routine to ensure that the car doors are locked while it is warming (make sure you have a second set of keys, too).
We would also like to educate everyone that while this practice is convenient, it may also be illegal depending on where you are parked. If the car is parked on the street, it is illegal to leave it running and unattended as per Pennsylvania Vehicle Code section 3701, which states:
“No person driving or in charge of a motor vehicle shall permit the vehicle to stand unattended without placing the gear shift lever in a position which under the circumstances impedes the movement of the vehicle, stopping the engine, locking the ignition in vehicles so equipped, removing the key from the ignition and, when standing upon any grade, turning the front wheels to the curb or side of the highway and effectively setting the brake.”
Let’s all have a safe and happy winter season and keep our vehicles from being stolen!
