The Police Department has been providing the DARE program at the Middle School since 1997. The curriculum is taught to all sixth grade students as part of their Health/Physical education program. At the end of the sessions, students participate in a culmination program and receive a certificate. Program requirements include completing the DARE planner, good attendance, good classroom behavior, completing the DARE essay, and no known involvement in drugs. Students taking the DARE core curriculum demonstrate a high level of classroom participation in both group and individual activities in completing these requirements.
The DARE program generates a high level of positive feedback from faculty members and parents complimenting the program and its presenters. It continues to result in a very positive relationship between youth and the Hummelstown Police Department.
The DARE program is funded each year through a grant provided by the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency.
