RIDE SAFE - DRIVE SAFE - PENNSYLVANIA BICYCLE LAW

As we enter the warmer months and witness an increase in pedestrian activity, especially among young children in our community, it is crucial to emphasize the importance of safe bike riding. We have observed many young children cycling around town, and as responsible parents and guardians, it is essential to prepare them for safe bike riding practices.

In Pennsylvania, it is a legal requirement for individuals under the age of 12 to wear a helmet while riding a bicycle. This law applies not only to operators but also to passengers, including those in attached restraint seats or trailers.

To ensure the safety of our young cyclists, the Highspire Police Department will be proactive in enforcing this bike riding regulation. If our officers encounter a child under the age of 12 who is not wearing a helmet while riding a bicycle, they will take the necessary steps to intervene, stop the child, and make contact with their parent or guardian. For first-time bike law offenses, a written warning will be issued to emphasize the importance of helmet safety.

When sharing the road with cyclists, it is vital to reduce speed and provide them with the appropriate right of way. Cyclists riding on the roadway have all the rights of operators of other types of vehicles on the roadway but are also subject to all the duties and responsibilities of motor vehicle operators. It is crucial to drive with care and be vigilant for cyclists in traffic and at intersections. Providing a minimum of 4 feet of distance and passing at a careful and prudent speed is essential. Drivers must ensure this distance and may cross the center line to pass a cyclist if it is safe to do so. The Highspire Police Department will be proactive in enforcing these bike riding regulations to ensure the safety of all road users.

To further educate the community on bike safety and Pennsylvania bicycle laws, we have provided two simple videos that offer valuable information on these topics.
