March 31, 2015- Commonwealth v Tabu Phillips: On March 31, 2015, Tabu Phillips was sentenced by Dauphin County Judge Scott Arthur Evans to six to fourteen years in state prison for illegal gun and body armor possession. Mr. Phillips was convicted earlier in March after a two day jury trial. Phillips, who insisted on representing himself at trial, was previously convicted of drug dealing offenses on two prior occasions. Additionally, he was convicted in 2006 of illegal firearm possession and was sentenced to three to eight years in state prison. The sentence that was handed down by Judge Evans was the most Phillips could receive under the Firearms Act. The case stems from Phillips’ 2012 arrest after Harrisburg police responded to a domestic incident. When police arrived at the scene, they caught Phillips attempting to leave. He was wearing military grade camouflaged body armor and had ditched a loaded handgun nearby. The prosecuting attorney, Senior Deputy District Attorney Stephen R. Zawisky, was concerned as to why Phillips was walking around Harrisburg with body armor and an illegal handgun. He noted that while body armor is technically legal to possess, a person may not possess it while committing a felony.
