On October 9, 2023, Gregory Greene pleaded guilty but mentally ill to two counts of first-degree murder, three counts of attempted murder, burglary, and other offenses. Judge William T. Tully accepted the pleas. Judge Tully imposed consecutive life sentences on the first-degree murder charges and consecutive terms of imprisonment on other offenses.
The offenses related to conduct on February 9, 2022. Greene stole a running Dodge Charger outside the victim's home at 5:45 a.m. in Swatara Township, Dauphin County. Greene then drove the stolen car to 1345 Liberty Street in the City of Harrisburg. A protection from abuse (PFA) order obtained by his sister barred Gregory Greene from that residence. At about 6:00 a.m., Greene illegally entered the house while the occupants slept. He went to the bedroom of his sister, Brittonie Meredith, on the second floor, and shot her in the face. The defendant continued down the hall and shot his other sister, Meredith Greene, multiple times. Meredith entered her mother's bedroom and closed the door behind her. Meredith died there but likely saved her mother's life by doing this.
The defendant climbed the stairs to the third floor where he found Tyler Thames whom he shot and killed. The defendant continued down the hall to the bedroom of his nieces, R.T., age 8, and A.T., age 6. He attempted to shoot R.T., but he was out of ammunition. The defendant stabbed R.T. in the neck and shoulder and threw her down the stairs. He then stabbed A.T. in the neck.
Despite being shot in the face, Brittonie Meredith was able to run out the front door and alert state narcotics agents who were serving a search warrant across the street. These agents from the Office of Attorney General saw the defendant leave the home and get into the Dodge Charger which had its engine running.
Officers from multiple jurisdictions pursued the fleeing defendant. During his flight, the defendant struck Officer Jason Heckendorn of the Lower Swatara Township Police Department as he was putting down stop sticks. Officer Heckendorn was treated at the Hershey Medical Center for an injury to his knee. Ultimately, the defendant crashed into a school bus and police captured him. He had blood on his person from A.T. and R.T. at the time of his arrest. Miraculously, Brittonie Meredith, A.T., and R.T. survived their wounds.
Greene submitted to mental health evaluations which established that he was mentally ill but not insane at the time of the offenses. Judge Tully imposed consecutive life sentences and a consecutive term of 21½ to 45 years in a state correctional institution. Senior Deputy District Attorney Katie Adam conducted the prosecution of the case. Detective Jason Brinker of the Harrisburg Bureau of Police was the lead investigator.
