Over the past several days, several social media sites have circulated posts regarding animals left in unoccupied vehicles during hot days. The Swatara Township Police Department would like to take this time to clarify the actions that could be taken if a citizen should happen on an animal left in a motor vehicle. Contrary to the social media posts, you are still required to contact the local police in that jurisdiction and allow the police time to respond and resolve the situation. Taking actions on your own could still lead to criminal charges being filed against you in addition to possible civil penalties from the owner of the animal. If you do see an animal that is unresponsive or in extreme distress, provide that information to the 911 dispatcher. The dispatcher can contact the responding officer who will then relay to you an appropriate course of action.
