Public Safety Announcement: Beware of Toll Violation Scam

The North Middleton Township Police Department is warning residents of a new text scam circulating in the area. Scammers are sending fake notices of toll violations, claiming that recipients have committed a toll violation in the City of Philadelphia and must take action to avoid penalties.

The scam text message include the stamp for the Commonwealth of  Pennsylvania, most with the headline "City of Philadelphia", making it appear official. The message claims that the recipient has failed to pay a toll and must either appear before a judge or pay a fine to avoid further action. The message also includes a QR code, which scammers claim will allow recipients to pay the fine online.

Do not respond to this message or scan the QR code. This is a scam, and any personal or financial information provided will be used for illegal purposes.

The North Middleton Township Police Department reminds residents to be cautious when receiving unsolicited messages, especially those requesting payment or personal information. Legitimate government agencies will never request payment or sensitive information via text message or email.

If you have received this scam message, do not take any action. Instead, report it to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and delete the message. Remember to always verify the authenticity of messages and requests before taking any action.
