Here, we'll delve into two critical aspects of student safety: school zones and crosswalks.

School Zones: Slow Down for Precious Cargo

School zones are designated areas surrounding schools where speed limits are significantly reduced. This reduction is in place for one reason: to protect children, who are more vulnerable pedestrians due to their size and developing awareness of traffic.

Here are some key points to remember about school zone safety:

• Obey the speed limit: It might seem like a short distance, but reducing your speed allows for more reaction time in case a child darts into the street.
• Be extra vigilant: Pay close attention to your surroundings, especially during peak drop-off and pick-up times. Look out for children walking, cycling, or even skateboarding.
• Avoid distractions: Put down your phone and eliminate any in-car distractions that could take your eyes off the road.
• Watch for crossing signals: Always be prepared to stop for crossing guards.

Crosswalks: A Safe Passage for Young Pedestrians

Crosswalks are designated areas for pedestrians to safely cross streets. They are often marked with painted lines, flashing lights, or even our wonderful crossing guards.

Here's how we can all work together to ensure crosswalk safety:

• Pedestrians: Use designated crosswalks whenever possible. Look both ways before crossing, even when the crossing guard is in your favor. Be aware of your surroundings and avoid distractions like headphones.
