Remembering Officer Willis John Cole - A Fallen Hero
Today, August 19th, we pause to remember Officer Willis John Cole of the New Cumberland Police Department, who tragically lost his life in the line of duty on August 19, 1994. He was just 30 years old.
Officer Cole devoted 10 years to serving and protecting the New Cumberland community. He was known for his bravery, compassion, dedication, and sense of humor, earning the deep respect of both his fellow officers and the citizens he served.
On that tragic day, Officer Cole responded to a robbery in progress at a coin shop in the 200 block of Fourth Street. While apprehending one suspect, another suspect came around the building and opened fire, striking Officer Cole in the chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Both suspects were captured within 45 minutes. They were later convicted, with one receiving a life sentence and the other a death sentence.
Officer Cole made the ultimate sacrifice while serving the Borough of New Cumberland. His courage, dedication, and selfless service will never be forgotten.
Today, we honor his memory and remember the life he gave in service to others. Our thoughts remain with his family, friends, fellow officers, and all those who continue to carry his memory forward.
