The New Cumberland Police Department is advising residents to remain vigilant regarding a recent rise in catalytic converter thefts across the region.

Catalytic converters contain valuable precious metals (platinum, palladium, and rhodium) and can be removed under a vehicle in less than two minutes using portable power tools.

Vehicles Most Frequently Targeted

While any vehicle with a catalytic converter can be targeted, thieves frequently seek out:

• High-clearance vehicles: Trucks, SUVs, and vans offer easier access beneath the chassis without needing a jack.
• Hybrid vehicles: Hybrids (such as the Toyota Prius) have converters with higher concentrations of precious metals due to less frequent engine combustion.

Prevention Tips for Vehicle Owners

1. Park Safely: Whenever possible, park in a locked garage, a well-lit area, or close to building entrances and security cameras.
2. Calibrate Security Devices: Set vehicle alarm systems to detect motion or vibration.
3. Engrave or Etch Your VIN: Etch your vehicle identification number (VIN) or license plate number directly onto the converter casing. This makes stolen parts harder to sell and easier to trace.
4. Install Protective Devices: Commercial anti-theft devices—such as catalytic converter shields, straps, or steel security cables—can significantly deter thieves.
5. Apply High-Temp Paint: Spraying your converter with high-temperature automotive paint (e.g., bright orange) flags the component to scrap yards as potential stolen property.
