ATTENTION RESIDENTS: BE AWARE OF PACKAGE THEFT

The New Cumberland Borough Police Department is alerting citizens to an increase in reported package thefts ("porch piracy") in various neighborhoods. As the holiday season is in full swing, and online shopping deliveries increase, opportunistic thieves are actively targeting unattended packages left on front porches and doorsteps.

We urge all residents to take proactive measures to protect their deliveries and report any suspicious activity immediately.

🛡️ PROTECT YOUR DELIVERIES: TIPS TO PREVENT PORCH PIRACY

  • Utilize Delivery Tracking & Alerts: Sign up for email or text notifications from shipping carriers (FedEx, UPS, USPS, Amazon) to know exactly when your package is delivered. Bring it inside immediately.

  • Use an Alternate Delivery Location:

    • Have packages delivered to your workplace if permitted.

    • Utilize Amazon Hub Lockers or delivery services' local pickup sites (e.g., UPS Access Point, FedEx Ship Center).

    • Ask a trusted neighbor who is home during the day to retrieve your packages.

  • Require a Signature: For high-value items, select the option to require a signature upon delivery.

  • Install Security Cameras: Doorbell cameras and visible security systems can act as a strong deterrent and provide valuable evidence should a theft occur.

  • Change Delivery Times: Many carriers allow you to customize or reschedule delivery times to ensure someone is home to receive the package.

  • Don't Advertise: Break down and immediately dispose of empty shipping boxes. Leaving large boxes curbside advertises what new valuable items you have received.

🚔 WHAT TO DO IF YOU SEE SOMETHING SUSPICIOUS

The principle of "See Something, Say Something" is vital. If you observe any suspicious persons or vehicles lingering in your neighborhood, especially those following delivery trucks or approaching homes and taking items:

  1. DO NOT confront the individual.

  2. Contact us immediately with the best possible description:

    • Emergency (Active Incident): Dial 911

    • Non-Emergency: Call 717-774-0404

Please provide: a description of the person(s), vehicle (make, model, color, and license plate number if possible), and the direction of travel.
