On May 9th, 2026, at approximately 11:26 am, the victim contacted the police department about an online scam. The victim, who resides in the 1st block of South Walnut Street, was contacted and asked to deposit several checks into their bank account and then transfer money out of the account. The victim was advised they would be given $300 for their time. The victim advised they received several "checks" from multiple email accounts. The victim deposited the "checks" through her bank's online deposit system. The victim then was contacted via text message and sent photos and videos of what appeared to be someone who was shot. The victim was told if they did not do as asked and send the transaction information for purchases of Apple gift cards and Chime debit cards, the same would happen to the victim. The victim purchased several Apple gift cards, online, and put money on several different Chime debit cards online. The account information for all of cards was sent to various emails and texted to other numbers. The victim learned later the checks were all fraudulent and the money which had initially been posted to their account, had now been deducted from their account. The victim spoke with the bank's fraud department and they told the victim to contact the police department. Anyone with information related to this incident is asked to contact the police department.
