On September 10th, 2026, at approximately 7:00 pm, the police department was contacted by a parent advising their child was the victim of a extortion. The following information was ascertained by the officer. The juvenile was added as a friend by an individual on Facebook. They began communicating and eventually the juvenile was asked to send a picture of themselves in a state of undress. The juvenile, who acknowledged their age to the individual, sent the requested picture. Immediately after sending the picture, the juvenile was contacted and told they had to pay $100 or the individual would post the picture to the X app. The individual sent a screenshot of what they were threatening to post. The juvenile advised their parent and the police department was contacted. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact the police department.
Parents are reminded to speak with their children about the dangers of social media and accepting friend requests or communications from people they do not know, strangers. They should also discuss the issues of sending pictures through cell phones and the criminality that can occur when such pictures are sent. Parents should monitor their children's social media accounts and gaming accounts. Children are reminded they are not legally allowed to create such accounts under the age 13, without their parent's permission.
