Our brothers and sisters at the West Whiteland Fire Company volunteer around the clock to keep our community safe, and this week we are proud to share an important lifesaving message with them.
This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme is “Charge Into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower!”
From phones and laptops to e-bikes and power tools, rechargeable lithium-ion batteries power our daily lives. But when charged incorrectly or using cheap, damaged equipment, they can overheat and cause dangerous fires.
Use your charging superpower with these quick tips:
- Only use the manufacturer's cord and charger designed for your specific device.
- Never charge devices under your pillow, on a bed, or on a couch where heat can get trapped.
- Unplug devices once they are fully charged (100%).
- Look out for warning signs: If a battery feels hot to the touch, smells strange, or changes shape, stop using it immediately!
When a fire or emergency strikes, police officers and fire fighters are always in it together to protect you. Thank a firefighter this week, and make sure your home's smoke alarms are tested and ready!
