Students at Beaver Creek Elementary School recently attended a special assembly focused on pedestrian safety for those students who walk to school. Lori McCloskey and Denae Diaz from The Chester County Highway Safety Project were joined by Chief Brazunas and Officer Coyle from DPD. The kids were great listeners and had some great questions. We appreciate Beaver Creek’s Principal, Dr. Dawn Lawless, for setting up this great conversation. There’s never a bad time to talk about pedestrian safety!
Some of the great points from the pedestrian safety assembly:
- Cross only at crosswalks. Don’t cross between parked cars.
- Before you cross the road > look left, right, then left again and keep looking.
- When using a crosswalk, make eye contact with approaching drivers.
- A vehicle’s speed or distance can be hard to determine. When in doubt, don’t cross!
- On streets with multiple lanes in each direction, be aware of what drivers in both nearby lanes are doing. If one driver allows you to cross, the other might not see you.
- Drivers need to see you to avoid you. Wear bright clothing!
- EYES UP! Always be aware of your surroundings and avoid distractions, such as looking at your phone while walking.
