Congratulations to Officer Chonko for completing DRE school and becoming a certified Drug Recognition Expert. DRE’s are skilled in the detection and identification of persons impaired by alcohol and/or drugs. DRE’s are trained to conduct a systematic and standardized evaluation consisting of physical, mental, and medical components. This training is part of a national program to determine if an individual has been driving under the influence of drugs and to identify the type of drug causing the impairment, or recognize whether the individual is suffering from a medical condition rather than an impairment. Because of the complexity and technical aspects of the DRE training, this is a notable accomplishment obtained by only a select few. Officer Chonko’s certification will benefit the township and surrounding communities by helping to keep impaired drivers off the roads.
