PRESS RELEASE:
On Sunday, December 10th, 2023, a small stream through Penndel Borough and parts of Middletown Township was polluted through the unintentional release of motor oil into Mill Creek. The incident is being investigated by the Penndel Borough Police Department, the Penndel Borough Fire Marshal, Penndel Fire Company, Middletown Fire Company, Bucks County Hazmat Team, and by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). Upon identification of the source, the property owner was alerted, and source of the oil was contained to the property by the fire company and hazmat unit. The property owner is working with the DEP to contract with a DEP-approved contractor to address the cleanup of the stream and the property. Hazardous material containment methods are in place on the property and in the creek to contain the spilled oil. These containment methods will be maintained and changed periodically by the contracted company until the surface water is cleaned thoroughly. This cleanup will be monitored through the cleanup process by the DEP.
Until the sheen and odor are completely gone and the cleanup has been completed per DEP regulation, we recommend the following common-sense actions to protect your families and properties;
Do not allow children to play in the stream.
Do not encourage pets to drink from or enter the stream.
Do not use stream water for drinking or irrigation.
Should you have any questions or concerns regarding this incident, you are invited to call the Borough at 215-757-5152. Should you have any questions regarding the cleanup of the stream, please contact DEP Southeast Regional Office at 484-250-5900.
