Crime Watch starting in 1994 with a group concerned citizens wanting to make a difference in the community. Working with the Hummelstown Police Department, a roving crime watch patrol was initiated. Crime Watch members patrol during the evening hours on Friday and Saturday throughout the year. They are in contact with police officers at the office and via a cell phone when on patrol. Crime Watch members have notified police of suspicious activities that have lead to arrests for curfew violations, DUI drivers, and trespassing.
Crime Watch organizes Hummelstown’s Annual National Night on Crime on the first Tuesday of August in the Schaffner Memorial Park. It is a fun night of activities, music, and food that culminates in a march (walk) on crime through the Borough.
Today Crime Watch has about 30 active members and meets quarterly at the Borough Building. Crime Watch is always looking for more volunteers. Contact Crime Watch President Barb Carlton through email hockeybc2@aol.com or Chief Charles M. Dowell at 566-2555. Crime Watch membership applications can also be picked up at the Borough Office.
One of the organization's biggest activities is the annual National Night Out. National Night Out is spearheaded by the National Town Watch Organization.
National Night Out is a great opportunity for a fun family outing in a safe atmosphere. The Hummelstown Crime Watch provides activities for children and adults. Good food, door prizes and lots of fun are on tap for the evening. Come out and show your support for the National Night Out Against Crime. It is held each year in August at Schaffner Park in Hummelstown.
