Theft by Deception

On July 1st, 2026, at approximately 1:04 pm, a resident from the 200 block of West Maplewood Avenue called the police department to report they had been scammed out of a significant amount of money. The victim advised on June 26th, a pop up appeared on their computer advising the victim they had child pornography on their computer and the victim was directed to contact the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) immediately. The victim called the number provided and they were told to withdraw several thousand dollars out of their bank account and make a deposit into a Bitcoin machine in Enola. The victim went to their bank where the employees tried explaining to the victim it might be a scam. The victim withdrew money and deposited it into the Bitcoin machine as directed. They realized soon after they had been scammed. Anyone with information related to this incident is asked to contact the police department. 

Residents are reminded to not call phone numbers when directed to call by pop ups or letters received in the mail. One should look the number up for themselves and not trust the provided number is the correct number. Anytime someone is directed to make payments using gift cards or bitcoin transactions should immediately consider it might be a scam of some sort. Residents are encouraged to contact their police department if they find themselves questioning transactions or requests as being a scam or not.
