Maryland man accused of selling fake high-end trading cards for $15,000 in North Huntingdon

Details Map

North Huntingdon, PA -- A Maryland man is wanted by North Huntingdon Township Police for allegedly selling high-end, fake trading cards for a $15,000 profit.

Police have an active arrest warrant for Joel Brown, 21, of Germantown, Maryland.

In January, the victim reported the theft to North Huntingdon Township Police Department.

The victim told police he was in the market of buying and selling trading cards for profit.

He told officers he was investing in cards from the "One Piece" trading card game and found four expensive, rare cards being sold on Facebook Marketplace.

The individual selling them had a Facebook profile under the name Eric Mercado and the listing was for $15,000.

The victim met the seller at Norwin Town Square in late January to exchange the cards for the cost of $15,000.

When the victim took the cards to a resale shop in preparation to be sold, the shop employee told the victim the cards had different markings and details in the printing, and the cards appeared to be fake.

The victim attempted to contact the Facebook profile who sold him the cards, but he was subsequently blocked on Facebook and by phone, according to police.

North Huntingdon Township Police began looking into the Facebook account associated with the seller and discovered it was linked to several phone numbers and social media accounts affiliated with Joel Brown.

Brown was allegedly involved in various other scams and crimes involving trading cards in the Virginia area.

North Huntingdon Township Police received data from Meta that the Facebook account had a series of different names it operated under.

Upon executing search warrants on Brown's cell phone provider, police were able to determine using geolocation records that Brown was in the area of Norwin Town Square when the trading card transaction with the victim occurred.

By using his pinged locations, police determined Brown drove from West Virginia to North Huntingdon.

Brown is facing charges of theft, receiving stolen property, and simulating objects of antiquity/rarity.
