Quarries may look like tempting places to cool off, but they are dangerous industrial sites. Swimming in a quarry can be fatal. Please talk to your young people about these hidden hazards.
Why Quarries Are Deadly
- Extreme Cold: Deep water stays freezing just below the surface. This triggers sudden muscle cramps and cold shock. Cold shock can paralyze your muscles instantly.
- Hidden Hazards: Submerged machinery, sharp rocks, and abandoned cars lurk unseen. You can easily get trapped or injured.
- Toxic Water: Abandoned quarries collect industrial pollution, stagnant runoff, and animal waste. Swallowing this water causes severe illness.
- Sheer Drop-offs: Shallow edges drop instantly into deep pits. Weak swimmers can quickly get overwhelmed.
- No Rescue: Quarry walls are steep and unstable. Emergency responders cannot easily reach someone in trouble.
The Lower Allen Twp. Police Department has had to respond to numerous incidents at quarry sites within the township in the last two weeks. The dangers are listed above. But quarries are also private property and all persons found will be held responsible. Numerous charges have been filed just in the last two weeks.
If you want your young people safe and you don't want them in trouble with the law, keep them out of the quarry!
