The Easton Police Department would like the public to know about the implementation of Pennsylvania's Paul Miller Law, aimed at reducing distracted driving and promoting responsible cellphone use behind the wheel which goes into effect June 5, 2026.
The legislation prohibits drivers from using handheld mobile phones or other interactive wireless communication devices while operating a motor vehicle. This law is named in honor of Paul Miller, a 21-year-old who tragically lost his life in a distracted driving accident in 2010.
The Paul Miller Law is a crucial step towards reducing the alarming number of accidents caused by distracted driving. According to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, in 2020 alone, there were over 14,000 crashes involving distracted drivers, resulting in 66 fatalities and over 4,000 injuries.
Under this law, drivers are prohibited from:
Using handheld mobile phones or other interactive wireless communication devices while driving
Texting, emailing, or engaging in any other form of electronic communication while operating a vehicle
Watching videos or streaming content while driving
Exceptions to the law include:
Emergency responders using devices for official business
Drivers using hands-free devices or voice-activated technology
Drivers reporting emergencies or roadside incidents
Violators of the Paul Miller Law will face fines and penalties, with repeat offenders facing increased consequences. Remember, safe driving is everyone's responsibility. Keep your eyes on the road, your hands on the wheel, and your attention focused on the task of driving.
