From May 18 to May 31, 2026, the Corning Police Department will be participating in the National Buckle Up New York Click It or Ticket campaign in an effort to save lives through increased seat belt use. This enforcement period comes ahead of the Memorial Day holiday, one of the busiest travel weekends of the year.
According to research conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, while 91.2 percent of passenger vehicle occupants buckled up in 2024, 9,758 occupants of fatal crashes nationwide were not restrained.
Too many people wrongly believe they are safe in the back seat unrestrained. 47 percent of all front-seat passenger vehicle occupants killed in crashes in 2024 were unrestrained, but 58 percent of those killed in back seats were unrestrained.
During the nighttime hours, the number of unrestrained occupants increased to 56 percent of those killed.
These facts gravely highlight the need for increased enforcement and awareness of seat belt use. Officers will issue citations for seatbelt violations both day and night..
Thousands of citizens will be traveling this upcoming Memorial Day weekend, as well as throughout the summer vacation season. We want to make sure that people are buckling up to keep themselves and their families safe. Buckling up is the greatest defense in a vehicle crash.
