An on-duty Hudson Police Department's K9 unit assisted the Firestone Police Department with a warrant service in the area of 5508 Daylily Ln. The operation was initiated after Larimer County Pre-Trial Services notified Firestone PD about 54-year-old Jack Gelfand, who had two outstanding felony warrants.
Officers located Gelfand's truck parked on Hackberry Trail/Daylily Ln, and when they approached, the vehicle began to drive away. The Hudson officer intervened, and the truck came to a stop. Despite repeated announcements, Gelfand failed to respond. Due to the tinted windows, officers were unable to see inside the vehicle.
Law enforcement deployed a 40mm less-lethal gun to break the driver's door and rear passenger door windows, but Gelfand remained out of sight. The K9 unit was then deployed through the rear window, and officers saw Gelfand motionless in the driver's seat. The K9 bit Gelfand on the right shoulder, but he showed no reaction. The K9 was recalled, and a bloodied handgun was found on the driver's floorboard. Gelfand was pulled from the truck and pronounced deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. No gunshot was heard by officers on the scene.
