Citizens have been calling into our department about a telephone scam. Someone claiming to be a Lieutenant with the York County Sheriff's Department Civil Processing Division is informing citizens that they missed Jury Duty, have unpaid fines or court costs, or some other legal obligation that the citizen failed to comply with. The suspect caller then goes on to describe the fines and costs levied against individuals in an attempt to lure people to send money or provide personal information in a serious Fraud attempt. The suspect caller has been using text based phone numbers to make the calling phone number appear local (717). The York County Sheriff's Department would never contact citizens this way, nor would they elicit funds in a manner that would involve victims being coerced to send money via Western Union, gift cards, or by contacting the suspect(s) by phone with credit card information or wire transfers. If you believe you are the victim of one of these Frauds, please contact the police. Our desk phone number is (717) 846-1234. Thank you and stay safe during this holiday season.
