Chief of Police Michael P. Ward of the City of Bradford Police Department is announcing the arrest of George K. Jones on animal cruelty charges following a disturbing discovery in the woods above Tuna Avenue.
On December 10, 2025, City of Bradford Police responded to a report of abandoned dogs on the hill in the woods above Tuna Avenue. A concerned hunter, who was in the area, called authorities after finding the animals contained in a makeshift campsite. Upon arrival, officers found Jones, who claimed to be living at the campsite with the dogs, but leaving them unattended during the day.
Officers, including Sgt. Shephard, a seasoned K9 handler, observed the campsite and found no evidence of recent footprints or anyone having visited the animals recently. The makeshift shelter, made of wood and plastic tarp, showed signs of neglect, with the door buried in snow, indicating no one had checked on the animals in some time.
The three dogs were found to be extremely malnourished and visibly underweight, with ribs, hips, and spinal bones showing. One dog, in particular, was in grave condition, unable to walk through the snow, and had to be carried down the hill. Sgt. Shephard deemed the situation critical and advised Jones that the animals would be seized.
Jones became irate and disorderly, leading to his arrest. The City Police took immediate care of the animals, rendering aid and assistance at the police station before transferring them to the SPCA. Unfortunately, the dog in the worst condition succumbed to its injuries.
Jones was charged with animal cruelty and disorderly conduct, and arraigned by Magistrate Luther. Bail was set at $10,000 cash, and Jones was remanded to McKean County Jail. The investigation is ongoing, with the City Police working closely with veterinary experts, the SPCA, and the District Attorney's Office to gather additional evidence.
Chief Ward emphasized, "The City of Bradford Police will not tolerate animal cruelty and will use all resources available to prosecute those responsible. We are committed to protecting the welfare of all living beings in our community."
